Time Lapse Photography Services Science, Education And Film

Time lapse photography services use still images taken at even intervals then played as a film giving the illusion of rapid change which in real time is slow for human perception. Common subjects are flowers blooming, sunrises and sunsets, seedlings sprouting, and global weather patters to name a few. Though similar in principle and method, should not be confused with stop motion animation.

Various industries have benefited from freeze sequence video. Scientific institutions are able to see cellular division, plant growth and water dynamics has given new insight to biologic processes. Schools are able to teach students on a variety of subjects from star movement and meteorology to watching flowers bloom offering visual differences between species.

Eadweard Muybridge, late 19th century England, coined the term ‘freeze frame’ describing visually imperceptible movement captured frame by frame over time. 20th century photographers who took up where Muybridge left off, RR Rife developed cinemicrography or photographing microscopic organisms. While John Ott captured plant growth on video.

By the 1950′s and 1960′s speed cinemamicrography and still frame technique became common. Nature films produced by The Discovery channel, PBS NOVA and Walt Disney Productions offer complete episodes or segments within a TV show that is time lapse filmed. In 1995, ‘The Private Life of Plants’ produced by David Attenborough, composed the entire series in still motion capture. In the theater, audiences cried and applauded the flowers growing and dying in ‘ET’.

Filming imperceptive motion requires taking stills and making video. Traditional film is twenty four stills per second. The projector or playback system interprets the film at the same rate, giving the effect of motion. Instead of each still frame being actual time, the individual frames are in timed intervals. Such as one frame in 2 hours over a period of one week. When they are played back, at 24 frames per second, playback appears much faster than the actual event. The stills are edited in photo editing and video editing software where they are composited achieving the final result.

Other considerations before filming include lighting changes. A camera with automatic stutter and advance, stability of subject filmed must be accounted. Weather changes and interruptions such as animals or people need to be considered. Also, frequency of taking the photo needed to capture and smoothly playback the complete duration of the event.

This expanding, dynamic video specialty offers new territory in film sciences. Time lapse photography services are offered by commercial photography studios and colleges alike. The possibilities are endless as technology continues to grow and new subjects are investigated. Read more about: Time Lapse Photography Services
